Right Here Right Now

I sit on the couch
Sophie beside me
I find comfort in her snoring

I feel the vibration of my watch
7 o’clock, a reminder, time for Sophie’s pill

There was a time 7:00 p.m. was my favorite hour of the day
Dinner was eaten
Tummies full
Dishes done

Richard settled in his recliner
Laptop in hand

I get cozy on my side of the couch
Release the lever
Feet propped up
This day is done

Sophie is right next to me, her head on my leg
Noise from the TV
Neither one of us really paying attention
We’re each surfing the net
Richard sends me a text, what’s for desert, we laugh, a text?!?!

Total contentment. Bliss. Happiness.

Another time, never to be again.

Now it’s just Sophie and me
I know these days with her are getting fewer and fewer
But for now I will do my best to be present in this moment
Make another memory

7:00 p.m.
Dinner eaten
Dishes done
Sophie given her pill
I settle in on my side of the couch, always the right side
Sophie sleeps besides me, gently snoring

I close my eyes and take a mental snapshot of this moment
There’s a bittersweetness to it

7:00 p.m.
Right here right now
